As the world enters a new era of digital evolution, the mobility sector will need to adapt or face an uncertain future. A new $125 million project with 2 GWh in a 22nd-century solar train has been announced, and no, it’s not in California. The rail sector has been responsible for transforming not only the American economy, but the global one as well.  Another American state is set to inaugurate the astonishing train in 2026, and the adoring public is salivating at the new and innovative technology.

A new and exciting evolution of the rail sector is unfolding before our eyes

The rail sector has long been the cornerstone of regional trade and efficient transportation. However, conventional wisdom dictates that these trains need to be powered by traditional energy sources. As the world grapples with the reality of an ever-changing energy and mobility sector, one company is set to reshape the American rail landscape.

The future technologies that we have been subjected to dreaming about in movies and television shows are closer than ever to becoming a reality. Keeping that in mind, the rail sector has not received adequate attention and investments in new technology to keep up with the ever-evolving nature of modern-day society. A new 22nd-century solar train has changed all that.

Suntrain has altered the American rail sector and has amazed the public and government officials alike

Suntrain, a San Francisco-based company, has revealed its latest development that features custom railcars made of iron-phosphate batteries to carry 2 gigawatt-hours of energy between the generation point and the load. The company has stated that it is catalyzing America’s energy transition through its existing rail network.

“SunTrain enables America’s Class I freight railways to physically ship power on a daily schedule. Data Centers, Utilities, Mines, and Ports can connect to power in only 24 months, faster than they can build their own power plant.” – Suntrain website

Colorado is set to see a Suntrain demonstration in the near future

Several companies and organizations have backed Suntrain’s plan to demonstrate the efficiency and potential that the technology has. Polis, NREL, and others have stated their support for a Pueblo-to-Denver demonstration project. The plan would be to charge up a train full of massive batteries with clean solar or wind energy and then proceed to roll the trains out of the station on the way to the Mile High City, Denver.

Representatives from Suntrain, alongside the Governor of Colorado, Jared Polis, and Xcel Energy, noted that the concept is ready to roll. Additionally, the group stated that if they land a $10 million federal grant, a demo project between Peublo and Denver could be on the cards by 2026. The Suntrain concept has mostly been financed through venture capital up to this point.

The Governor noted that if the state of Colorado aims to keep up with the likes of California, more work would need to be done to find innovative solutions to complex problems.

“There’s lots of exciting technologies to be looked at. Of course, not everything that entrepreneurs are trying will work out, but the fact that we have dozens of ideas being pursued that at least pencil out with projections on paper — we’re going to need some of those solutions” – Colorado Governor Jared Polis

Thanks to Suntrain, Colorado’s future is looking brighter than ever

Colorado has long been subjected to ridicule from other states over its laid-back approach and overwhelmingly positive attitude. By promoting the Suntrain project, the state could become the cornerstone of the modernization of America’s rail and energy network. The concept has been approved by the relevant authorities, and once it comes online in 2026, Coloradans can expect up to 2 GWh of delicious, clean energy transported via an innovative transportation system that has the potential to reshape the sector forever.
