Edsania Tavares thought she had spotted two puppies beside a wooded road in Brazil. When she stopped and approached them, more little dogs emerged from the vegetation, turning a brief interruption into a much bigger rescue. She took the group into her care rather than leave them behind.
The encounter had a reassuring outcome for the puppies, but it also left an unanswered question about their missing mother. Behind the surprise was a less visible part of animal rescue, finding room for new arrivals and caring for them until permanent homes could be found.
Two puppies were only the beginning
According to the account published by The Dodo on August 13, 2026, Tavares was traveling between two towns when she noticed two small black puppies, partly hidden by foliage. The outlet reported that seven more appeared as she approached, bringing the group to nine.
There is a discrepancy in the published accounts. Brazilian outlet Só Notícia Boa reported eight puppies, and a shelter caption reproduced by Reshareworthy also referred to eight rather than nine. The available sources do not resolve that difference.
For Tavares, the emotional impact went well beyond surprise at the number of dogs. She told The Dodo that she panicked and cried when she found them alone, describing how “the whole gang appeared” after she first noticed only two.
A rescue that required more than a quick pickup
Getting the puppies to safety was not as simple as their initial approach might suggest. In a shelter post reproduced by Só Notícia Boa, Tavares said the rescue took three hours and that she had to bring a shelter employee to help gradually gain their trust.
Additional reporting by Brazilian outlet Amo Meu Pet described the puppies retreating into their hiding place after initially running toward her. The team used patience and food to encourage them to come closer, eventually getting the group out of the woods.
That detail changes how the encounter reads. The amusing image of puppies suddenly appearing tells only the beginning of the story, while the hours spent earning their trust show the work needed to turn a roadside discovery into a completed rescue.
Their mother was still missing
A nearby resident told Tavares that the puppies had appeared in the area two days earlier, according to The Dodo. That information offered a rough timeline, but it did not establish exactly how they had arrived or who had previously cared for them.
Tavares later returned to look for their mother in case she, too, had been left nearby. After hours of searching, she found no sign of the adult dog, the outlet reported. The account does not establish what happened to her, so describing the puppies as confirmed orphans would go beyond the evidence.
Making room at an already full refuge
Tavares was not new to caring for animals without homes. A former business owner, she runs Instituto Rede do Bem Cocal do Sul, a refuge for unwanted and abandoned pets, and brought the puppies into that rescue community.
But taking them in required an adjustment. In another shelter post reproduced by Reshareworthy, Tavares said the organization was caring for 164 rescued animals at the time and was already full. She explained that they improvised a space for the newcomers.
“I could never have left them behind,” Tavares told The Dodo. Her account illustrates a practical difficulty in this particular rescue. The puppies needed somewhere to go, but the place willing to receive them was already occupied by other animals needing care.
Safe shelter was the start, not the finish
At the time of The Dodo’s report, the puppies were adjusting to life among the refuge’s other rescued dogs. Tavares planned to find them new homes and keep them under her care in the meantime, rather than treat the pickup itself as the end of the job.
“The goal is to give animals the lives they deserve,” she said. The report did not document completed adoptions, so their arrival at the shelter should not be confused with confirmation that each puppy had already found a family.
