Chinese automobile manufacturers are consistently offering increased competition to other automobile manufacturers, even Lamborghini. With the most notable competition between American electric car company Tesla and Chinese electric car company BYD, China continues to excite with their developments of both entry-level and luxury vehicles that offer futuristic technology at a much more accessible price. Recently, a new Chinese automobile manufacturer has unveiled their latest vehicle model, a car that not only looks luxurious but also comes with an affordable price tag for consumers.

Omoda: A new automobile manufacturer player

Omoda is a new Chinese automobile manufacturer established in 2022. They operate as a division under Chery International. The Omoda C5 was introduced as its inaugural model. The brand has only recently entered the European market last year, and has yet to penetrate the American market. Currently, the brand offers the following five models in its lineup:

  • Omoda C5/5 (2022–present), rebadged Chery Omoda 5
    • Omoda E5 / C5 EV (2024–present), electric version of Omoda C5/5
  • Omoda S5/O5 (2023–present), rebadged Chery Arrizo 5 Plus
  • Omoda S5/O5 GT (2023–present), rebadged Chery Arrizo 5 GT
  • Omoda C7/7 (2025–present)
  • Omoda C9/9 (2024–present), rebadged Exeed Yaoguang

In terms of who Omoda targets, Chery president Zhang Guibing has stated that the brand aims to sell to consumers titled the “Fashion Elite”, a group of fashion-oriented customers that are “dynamic, avantgarde, and fashion-centric”. Omoda cars have been noted for their sleek and futuristic design. The brand is currently developing the Omoda C3, a subcompact crossover SUV.

‘Lamborghini’ from Omoda for only $30k

The new Omoda C3 was recently unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show. The car is set to become Omoda’s entry-level model. The design of the vehicle has been noted for its similarity to the Lamborghini Urus. The Urus was first introduced in 2018 and is a blend of the brand’s iconic sports car design with a practical SUV design. The Urus boasts a starting price of $225,000,

In comparison, the Omoda C3 will enter the market at a starting price of $30,000. The design boasts bold and sharp angles with an aggressive looking styling. The model will also be both fully electric as well as hybrid models on offer. It is set to be rolled out by the end of 2026, offering a competitive edge to current vehicles on the road, particularly in the electric vehicle space.

Increasing competition from Chinese manufacturers

Omoda’s up and coming designs at an accessible price point joins the likes of Chinese automobile manufacturing giants BYD and Xiaomi. Further, these automobile companies are providing increased international competition with cutting-edge designs which are reliable and affordable. BYD in particular has been noted for its possibility of usurping the position of Tesla as the dominant electric vehicle manufacturer on the road.

Recently, BYD has overtaken Toyota car sales in Singapore, highlighting the rapidly accelerating growth the company is experiencing in international markets. Next week, the company launches a new all-electric sedan, the e7,  with a range of up to 520 kilometers. The car is powered by a single electric motor and reaches a peak power of 100 kW, and can support a maximum speed of 150 kilometers per hour.

Last year, electric car sales in China increased by 40%, contributing to China’s major international growth in electric car sales. In 2021, more than half of global electric car sales came from the Chinese market. In China itself, electric vehicles are far outpacing internal combustion engines, growing by approximately 10% each year. With increased innovation from companies like Omoda and BYD, China is significantly contributing towards the transportation revolution amidst the climate crisis, working towards more sustainable engine solutions to combat climate change and to help the world stay on track for climate targets and goals.
