Abound Solar brings 1-MW thin-film PV plant in India online

Colorado-based thin-film solar company Abound Solar and Indias Solar Integration Systems India Private Limited (Solarsis) commissioned a 1-megawatt solar photovoltaic plant in Andhra Pradesh.

The project is under the rooftop solar power scheme of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission.

The project used Abound Solar’s cadmium telluride thin-film modules, with racking and mounting from Solarsis. The plant used 620-kilowatt thin-film modules and 380-kilowatt crystalline silicon modules.

The Andhra Pradesh project is the first official project between Abound Solar and Solarsis since the two announced a partnership and long-term purchase agreement targeting the Indian solar market in March last year.

Abound Solar’s previous installations are in the United States and Germany, but it had three previous installations in the Indian state of Rajasthan.

Solarsis has completed several off-grid system projects for small villages around India. The project with Abound Solar is their second grid-connected solar power project so far. Their first was a 2-MW solar power plant in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, which started operation in early 2011.

India’s National Solar Mission aims to see an installed capacity of 20,000 MW of solar power capacity in the country by 2022.

«India is a key market for Abound Solar due to our U.S.-made CdTe panel’s excellent performance in India’s climate, our commercial focus over the past two years and our successful use of U.S. Export-Import Bank financing. We have a significant installed base in India and see this growing in 2012,» said Craig Witsoe, Abound Solar chief executive. – Katrice R. Jalbuena
