Inner Mongolia adds 50 MW of wind capacity using Vestas’ turbines

Industry leader Vestas Wind Systems A/S will ship out 50 megawatts’ worth of turbines for a new power farm in Inner Mongolia, a prime location for wind projects in China.

Vestas has signed a deal with the renewable energy unit of state-owned China Datang Corporation to deliver 25 units of 2-MW wind turbines by the third quarter. They will be for the Dashuiboluo wind farm located in Linxi county in Inner Mongolia.

Vestas, a major player in the Chinese wind market, will be responsible for transporting, raising and commissioning the turbines. The company will also provide its wind farm control system technology.

Inner Mongolia in Northern China has abundant wind resources. About 7,670 MW of wind power capacity has been installed in the region as of May this year, or one-third of China’s total capacity from wind.

China now ranks as the third largest wind energy producer in the world with 423 wind farms nationwide producing 22.68 million kilowatt-hours of electricity.

China produced 51.6 billion kWh of wind power by the end of 2009, which displaced 18.06 million tons of coal and reduced 55.62 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

China’s State Grid Corporation estimated the country’s wind capacity will reach 150 million kWh by 2020.
Vestas (OMX:
VWS
), started making wind turbines in 1979 and was the first wind turbine enterprise to penetrate the Chinese market with its 1986 project in Shandong, a coastal province in Eastern China.

So far, Vestas has completed wind projects in 13 Chinese provinces including Guangdong and Heilongjiang and in the Ningxia Hui autonomous region. Vestas ended 2009 with over 3.5 billion Chinese yuan ($513 million) in investments in China’s wind market.
