Wind energy is continuing its worldwide growth as attested by the strong advance of companies such as India’s Suzlon, the company said.
Last week, Suzlon reported having reached 15,000 megawatts in wind power installations worldwide since it started 15 years ago, in 1995.
The power generation capacity comes from 10,500 wind turbines mostly manufactured by the Indian company and now Asia’s world wind leader.
Suzlon’s installed wind power capacity now accounts for 9 percent of the world’s total installed wind energy.
“This landmark signifies the growing acceptance and importance of wind in the energy mix, and Suzlon’s role in bringing that about,” said Tulsi R. Tanti, founder and current chairman and managing director of Suzlon Energy Limited.
Over 50 percent of Suzlon’s installations are in India, followed by the United States, Germany, France and China.
Mr. Tanti said global wind potential is estimated at 72,000 gigawatts – more than four times the current world energy consumption. “As we look ahead, there is incredible potential waiting to be tapped…. We have barely scraped the surface,” he said.
“Harnessing this potential means providing for a clean, green future, sustainable livelihoods, and very important – energy security. As a Group, we are well positioned to compete in the global wind market and play our part in providing ecologically sustainable development all over the world,” Mr. Tanti said.
Suzlon said it is now the world’s third leading wind turbine manufacturer by market share, putting it comfortably along such companies as giants Vestas, Siemens and G.E.
Suzlon gained its position after becoming a 90 percent shareholder of REpower Systems A.G. The group has over 13,000 employees across 32 countries on six continents, where it also has manufacturing facilities, supply chain operations, project management and operations and maintenance presence.
It offers customers products from 600-kilowatt to 6-MW wind turbines, for both the onshore and offshore wind markets.
India’s largest wind farm, in Kutch, and has a total capacity of 806.20 MW installed by Suzlon.
