A turbine blade failure about 15 miles off Nantucket on July 13, 2024, sent fiberglass and foam toward the island’s beaches, triggering swimming closures during the summer tourist season. What looked like a single equipment failure grew into a much larger problem, with Vineyard Wind later alleging that at least 66 of 72 installed blades had inadequate adhesive bonding.

Two years later, the federal investigation still had no announced completion date, according to reporting published July 30, 2026. The wind farm had finished installing its turbines, but the public record explaining what went wrong remained incomplete.

Why the debris closed the beaches

Nantucket’s initial notices described green or white fiberglass fragments, including sharp pieces floating beneath the water’s surface. Although company statements called the material “non-toxic,” town officials warned that it could injure swimmers and beachgoers, a distinction that mattered to anyone walking barefoot along the shore.

All south-shore beaches closed to swimming on July 16 and reopened on July 17 after extensive recovery work, according to the town’s contemporaneous updates. Cleanup continued afterward, and officials advised visitors to wear footwear and leave debris collection to trained crews.

The town’s updates described a fiberglass shell with foam inside, rather than a solid metal blade. Much of the foam escaped during the initial failure, and another large section fell into the ocean on July 18, complicating the recovery effort.

The problem began in a Canadian factory

GE Vernova traced the failure to what it called a “manufacturing deviation” at its Gaspé, Canada, factory. During a July 24, 2024, earnings call, CEO Scott Strazik acknowledged that the inspection or quality-assurance process should have caught it. At that stage, he said the company had found no indication of an engineering design flaw.

The more detailed figures appeared in Vineyard Wind’s April 2026 complaint against GE Renewables, a GE Vernova subsidiary. It alleged that 68 of the 72 installed blades could not be used as they were, including at least 66 with inadequate bonding, and that some needed repairs before removal to prevent them from collapsing into the water. The complaint described the failed bond as being in a critical load-bearing region, where the blade must carry structural forces.

Those figures represent allegations in a court filing, not the findings of a completed federal investigation. Separately, the companies’ October 2024 response update described reexamining more than 8,300 ultrasound images per blade and using “crawler” drones for physical inspections before removing or reinforcing affected blades.

What the $10.5 million settlement covers

On July 11, 2025, Nantucket announced a $10.5 million settlement with GE Vernova to address losses from the incident. The agreement provided for a Community Claims Fund, administered independently, for residents and businesses with eligible cleanup expenses or economic losses.

Nantucket Current reported that professional fees would take 18 percent, or $1.89 million, leaving approximately $8.61 million before other allocations and expenses. The town’s official explanation also made clear that the agreement imposed no gag order and did not waive liability for future blade failures.

The town opened its claims process on January 26, 2026, with Verus, LLC handling submissions. Claimants had to document their losses, with a published submission deadline of June 26, 2026.

The wind farm moved ahead

Installation of all 62 turbines was completed on March 13, 2026, according to the project record maintained by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The 806-megawatt wind farm is designed to supply the equivalent of more than 400,000 homes, according to project information. That describes its intended scale, rather than a guarantee of constant electricity output.

On April 27, Massachusetts announced the activation of 20-year electricity contracts and projected $1.4 billion in customer savings over their lifetime. For households watching the electric bill, lower and more predictable supply prices are the promised payoff. The $1.4 billion remains an estimate of future savings.

Why the investigation still matters

The investigation begun by the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement continued after a July 2026 reorganization placed its responsibilities within the Marine Minerals Administration. In a statement reported by Nantucket Current on July 30, the successor agency said the inquiry “does not have a date for completion at this time.”

In May, the Vineyard Gazette reported obtaining a consultant’s root-cause analysis with all but its cover page redacted to protect commercial information. The newspaper also reported that results of required environmental studies had not been released. That leaves an important distinction between results the public has not seen and studies that were never done.

For coastal communities, the unfinished business is a clear account of how the failure happened, what damage it caused, and how a repeat will be prevented. Power generation and compensation address only part of that story.
