Integrating two clean technologies in one application, Urban Green Energy and G.E. installed the world’s first integrated wind-powered electric vehicle charging station, the Sanya Skypump, in Barcelona.
According to a report from Digital Trends, one of the criticisms being faced by electric vehicles is whether or not they can truly be considered green due to the fact that majority of electricity worldwide is fueled by coal.
The Skypump addresses that concern using UGE’s “4K” wind turbine and the EV charging capability of the high-voltage GE DuraStation, all within one unit and with all required electrical systems within the tower. It stands 42-feet tall and requires a minimum wind speed of seven miles per hour to operate its vertical-axis turbine.
While the technology is not exactly new, the Skypump takes the typical wind turbine design and shrunk it down into something fit for an urban setting.
“Since launching the Sanya Skypump, we have received inquiries from companies around the world that are looking to embrace sustainability,” said Nick Blitterswyk, UGE chief executive.
The station is installed in the headquarters of environmental services and waste treatment company Cespa, a subsidiary of transportation infrastructure investor Ferrovial Servicios.
Meanwhile, more Sanya Skypumps will be installed later this year in the U.S. and Australia at shopping malls, universities and other locations. – EcoSeed Staff
