The project is expected to be operational by the fall of 2014, at which point it will provide clean energy for nearly 20,000 American households.
Siemens has announced that they will be providing turbines for the Windthorst-2 project in Windthorst, Texas.
This is the second order of onshore wind turbines for Texas that Siemens has announced this week. The first was for the Panhandle 2 wind power project (see related story).
The Windthorst-2 will be using 28 Siemens 2.3-megawatt wind turbines for a total output capacity of 67.6 MW.
The project is expected to be operational by the fall of 2014, at which point it will provide clean energy for nearly 20,000 American households.
Aside from the turbine order, Siemens also signed a service and maintenance agreement for the project.
The Windthorst-2 project was recently sold to a fund managed by BlackRock. OwnEnergy will maintain a minority ownership interest in the project and manage its construction.
”We look forward to working with BlackRock and OwnEnergy on this project as they provide clean, renewable energy to the citizens of Texas,” says Mark Albenze, chief executive officer of Siemens Energy’s Wind Power Americas business.
According to Mr. Albenze, the turbines to be supplied to the Windthorst-2 project will be wholly manufactured in the United States at their Iowa and Kansas facilities.
“This order demonstrates that the production tax credit continues to provide and support manufacturing and constructions jobs in the U.S,” said Mr. Albenze.
The project is expected to have a positive economic impact on the region, creating 95 to 125 temporary jobs during the construction period and 5 to 7 long-term positions when the wind farm becomes operational. – EcoSeed Staff
