Dutch men grew about 20 centimeters in 150 years, going from among Europe’s shortest to its tallest, and a simulation shows natural selection explains less than half a centimeter of that change

Dutch men gained roughly 20 centimeters, or nearly 8 inches, in average height over about 150 years, helping transform one of Europe’s shortest populations into one of its tallest. The striking part is not simply how much they grew, but what that growth says about the conditions children experienced. This was a change in population averages, not a story about a few unusually tall families or athletes.

Research points mainly to improvements in nutrition, health, hygiene, and prosperity, rather than a large evolutionary shift. A 2023 simulation study estimated that natural selection contributed less than half a centimeter to the historical increase, shifting attention back to how successive generations of children lived. In practical terms, the story is about what children could eat and whether they could stay healthy while growing up.

From about 5 feet 5 inches to 6 feet

Historical records put Dutch male height at around 165 centimeters, roughly 5 feet 5 inches, before the mid-19th century. Place that beside more recent measurements and the scale of the transformation becomes clearer. What looks like a national physical trait has a surprisingly changeable history.

In its 2022 report, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) said men born in the Netherlands in 2001 averaged 182.9 centimeters at age 19, almost exactly 6 feet. That is a figure for a particular birth generation, not a measurement of every adult man living in the country today.

CBS also documented a substantial rise within the 20th century. Men born in 1930 averaged 175.6 centimeters, while those born in 1980 reached 183.9 centimeters, a difference of 8.3 centimeters, or about 3.3 inches.

Genes matter, but they do not tell the whole story

Height is strongly influenced by inherited genetic differences, which helps explain why children often resemble their parents in stature. But inheritance does not make growth independent of the environment.

The National Library of Medicine’s MedlinePlus resource explains that nutrition, infectious disease, and access to health care also influence adult height. A healthy, well-nourished child has a better chance of growing taller than a child facing a poor diet and repeated illness. Those influences matter during the years when the body is still developing.

Here is the important distinction. Explaining why two people differ in height is not the same as explaining why a whole population grows taller across generations. Strong genetic influences on individuals can coexist with a large historical improvement driven by living conditions.

Better food and healthier childhoods

Dutch study published in Pediatric Research in 2000 compared four nationwide growth studies spanning 42 years. Its authors identified several possible contributors to the increase, rather than pointing to one food or one change in daily life. They were examining a change unfolding across decades, not the effect of a short-lived dietary trend.

“Main contributors to the increase in height may be improved nutrition, child health, and hygiene, and a reduction of family size,” the researchers wrote. Their explanation placed childhood circumstances at the center of the story.

Notice the phrase “may be.” The findings support a broader improvement in growing conditions, not a formula assigning a certain number of extra inches to milk, medical care, or smaller families. The evidence is about a combination of conditions, not a shortcut parents can copy at the breakfast table.

What happened to the natural selection theory?

In 2015, research published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B found that taller Dutch men tended to have more children. That raised the possibility that natural selection, through differences in reproductive success, had helped push average height upward. Finding such a relationship, though, does not establish how much of a long-term trend it explains.

A later study put numbers to that possibility. In 2023, Gert Stulp, Tyler Bonnell, and Louise Barrett used simulations to estimate it, drawing on previously observed patterns of partnership, mortality, reproduction, and inheritance.

Their estimated contribution from natural selection between 1850 and 2000 was just 0.07 to 0.36 centimeters. Even the upper end amounts to less than 2% of a 20-centimeter increase, so the modeled effect was far too small to explain the transformation on its own.

A record of childhood, not a national scorecard

The upward trend was not endless. CBS reported that men born in 2001 were, on average, 1 centimeter shorter than those born in 1980, showing why the long historical rise should not be treated as a promise of ever-taller generations. It does not erase the earlier gains, but it complicates the familiar story.

Nor can a tape measure tell the complete story of someone’s childhood. Because both inherited traits and environmental conditions influence height, being short does not by itself mean someone was poorly nourished or inadequately cared for.

The more useful lesson is about giving children the conditions to develop, not chasing a national height record.
