This new EV combines the past and the future into a brand new contemporary vehicle design. With the world dealing with the challenges associated with imminent irreversible climate change damage, the transportation industry in particular has been creating alternative engine solutions in order to make a future without the internal combustion engine a reality. Not to sacrifice on aesthetic design, this automobile developer has drawn inspiration from the past for this brand new EV.

The EV takes over the automobile industry

When it comes to alternative engine solutions, the electrical vehicle has taken the automobile world by a storm. With breakthroughs from developers such as Tesla, who not only pioneered advanced electrical engine technology but also branded the electrical vehicle as a luxury product, these cars have become the preferred alternative model for consumers who are wanting to switch to greener solutions.

However, also fast on the rise, hydrogen fuel-cell technology has also become increasingly popular in the past decade and is emerging as a complement to electrical vehicles; filling the gaps where this technology falls short. While electrical vehicles are the most popular alternative solution in the passenger vehicle world, sectors within the transportation industry such as the aviation and long-haul trucking industry are leaning more towards hydrogen solutions due to the constraints of the batteries which would need to be used to in these industries should they go the electrical route.

New retro EV from this automobile developer

While electrical vehicles continue to be a symbol of futuristic technology, highlighting how far our advancements in technological innovation have come, specific elements of the past may not be fully left behind. While the writing is on the wall when it comes to the the reality of where the passenger vehicle is heading, the popularity of older retro designs of vehicles from the past remains present- as seen by avid vehicle collectors and motorist enthusiasts.

To meet consumers halfway, General Motors (GM) has recently unveiled a new electrical vehicle concept car for their Motorama exhibits. Dubbed the Buick Electra Orbit, the fully electrical vehicle draws design inspiration from 1950s ‘space-age glamour’ vehicle designs merged with the familiar sleek electrical vehicle designs we are used to seeing on the road.

“Electra Orbit is a bold exploration of what Buick can be when we blend heritage inspiration with visionary innovation,” according to Stuart Norris, Vice President of Design for GM China and GM International and Chief of Design at SAIC-GM.

While the technology of automobile from the 1950s may be staunchly in the rearview mirror, that doesn’t mean automobile developers are discarding all elements of the past. By drawing inspiration from these heritage cars, consumers can reminiscent on the past while continuing to embrace modern technological advancements of the automobile which support a sustainable future.

Is a world without the internal combustion engine possible?

While concept vehicle designs like those seen by General Motors continue to be exciting advancements, the reality is that the internal combustion engine continues to dominate the road. While alternative vehicle sales are on the rise, it does continue to seem difficult to imagine a world where the internal combustion engine truly is a thing of the past.

However, to offer a glimmer of hope, Norway is well on its way to becoming the first country to achieve total electrification on their roads. Thanks to incentives from the government to encourage consumers to purchase electrical vehicles as well as a commitment to scaling-up supporting infrastructure for electrical vehicles, the country saw last year 89% of all new-vehicle sales be electric, with high hopes for that statistic to ride to 100% by the end of this year.
