With 208 clean technology companies and investors calling it home, San Francisco is now the «Cleantech Capital of North America,» according to cleantech industry research firm Cleantech Group.
«Cleantech Group is proud to name San Francisco the ‘Cleantech Capital of North America’ in recognition of the City’s ongoing support for all things clean and green,» said Cleantech Group chief executive Sheeraz Haji, presenting the award to Mayor Edwin M. Lee during the 10th Cleantech Forum conference held in San Francisco this week.
According to Mayor Lee, becoming a center for the cleantech industry is part of San Francisco’s plans for the future.
«I am deeply proud of this important milestone, and I believe this is just the beginning as we are committed to making San Francisco’s cleantech ecosystem even stronger, more sustainable and more robust,» he said.

The city believes that a thriving clean technology sector is necessary to further their sustainability goals and that it plays an important part in their economic development efforts.
«From passing a tax exclusion for cleantech companies to recruiting international renewable energy firms, the city has made supporting the growth of the clean tech industry a priority,» said San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development director Jennifer Matz.
Eleven companies in the Cleantech Group’s Global Cleantech 100 have locations in San Franciso: Adura Technologies, Mission Motors, Nexant, Project Frog, RelayRides, SCIenergy, SunRun, AMEE, Harvest Power, Heliatek and OPower.
Of these, seven are headquartered in the city, which is more than what other locations have.
The Cleantech Group said from 2006 to 2011, clean technology companies raised $12 billion in venture capital in the San Francisco Bay area. – EcoSeed Staff
