Coca-Cola installs 1 millionth HFC-free cooler

The Coca-Cola Company has installed its 1 millionth hydrofluorocarbon-free cooler, effectively preventing the emissions of 5.25 million metric tons of carbon dioxide over 10 years.

Together with its bottling partners, Coca-Cola has set a goal to ensure that all their new cold- drink equipment – including dispensers, vending machines and coolers – will be HFC-free by 2015.

Since 2000, Coca-Cola eliminated 75 percent of their direct greenhouse gas emissions by transitioning to HFC-free insulation foam for their new equipment. They have also improved their new cooling equipments energy efficiency by 40 percent.

“Over the past decade we have invested more than $100 million to make our coolers better for the environment,” said Jeff Seabright, vice president, Environment & Water, The Coca-Cola Company.

In 2013 alone, Coca-Cola placed approximately 230,000 units of HFC-free equipment around the world.

“We’ve made sustainable refrigeration the cornerstone of our climate protection and energy management efforts,” said Mr. Seabright.

HFC’s are known contributors to climate change and phasing out their use in Coca-Cola’s equipment by 2015 will prevent the emissions of more than 50 million metric tons of carbon dioxide over 10 years, an amount equivalent to the annual emissions of more than 10 million passenger vehicles.

The Coca-Cola Company has been working hard to reduce the environmental impact of their operations. In July of last year, the company partnered with the World Wildlife fund to develop environmental sustainability goals for 2020 that focus on sustainable management of water, energy and packaging use as well as sustainable sourcing of agricultural ingredients (see related story). – EcoSeed Staff
