The United Nations Environment Programme and China have agreed to assist countries of the Global South in combating climate change.

The agreement to help Global South countries deal with climate change was endorsed in Nairobi by Chinese Premier Li Kequiang and U.N. Under-Secretary-General and U.N.E.P Executive Director Achim Steiner.

“This new agreement sends another powerful message that China is committed to combating climate change, not only within its borders, but across the Global South – and that in doing so, it count on U.N.E.P.’s unflagging support,” said Mr. Steiner.

“China would like to continue to collaborate with U.N.E.P. to enhance green development and sustainable environmental management. China has contributed US $6 million to the U.N.E.P. trust fund and will continue to make contributions to that fund into the future,” said Premier Li.

“China also wants to enhance communication, cooperation and coordination with U.N.E.P. and multilateral environmental agreements in support of global environmental sustainability and action to combat climate change at the national and global levels,” Premier Li added.

During their meeting, efforts to accelerate China’s transition to an inclusive green economy was also discussed, with the newly declared “war” on air pollution and the top issues on the agenda of the first-ever U.N. Environment Assembly (U.N.E.A.), that is due to be held in Nairobi this coming month.

U.N.E.P. and China, since 2008, have collaborated with countries across Africa and Asia on climate adaptation projects with co-funding by the Global Environment Facility and the Government of China. – EcoSeed Staff
